Description:

This self-paced course provides a survey of proven problem solving strategies and practices. Students will apply their knowledge to funding, training, ethical, program planning, and technological issues, including cost/benefit pressures on Career Advisors, professional boundaries and responsibilities of Career Advisors, and more.

This course provides three hours of professional development time toward the IACA Certified Career Advisor™ (CA) designation.

Objectives:
After completing this course, you should be able to:
  • Appreciate the importance of formal problem solving methods and strategies.
  • Describe the common issues regarding funding, training, ethical, planning, and technological problems facing career advisors today.
  • Explain how apply concepts from formal problem solving methods and strategies to a sampling of the problems facing career advisors today.
  • List resources available to career advisors regarding funding, training, ethics, program planning, and technology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of collaboration methods and techniques.
  • Compare characteristics of your particular field to those of other settings (Private, Public, Educational, Professional).

Competencies:

  • Training Clients and Colleagues – Ability to create appropriate support documents to assist with training of colleagues and students/clients.
  • Ethical and Legal Issues – Follows IACA's code of ethics and understands how to research legislation and policy initiatives related to career advising within their home country.

Description:

The purpose of this module is to give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence that you need to plan and deliver career planning services. The module will describe the specific steps of planning and implementation.

In class activities, you will have an opportunity to practice these steps by planning some program of services for a population that you currently work with or may work with in the future. When you complete these activities, you will have valuable tools to apply in your work setting.

As you read this module, imagine different populations that you might address and some of the ways in which you might meet their needs.

Objectives:

  • Understand and participate in the process of program development and assist supervisors to implement assigned parts of that process.
  • Collect information about the target populations to be served.
  • Provide and support services offered via one-on-one advising, group work, and online delivery.
  • Assist with promotion, as assigned.
  • Assist in the collection of evaluative data about the results or acceptance of a program of services.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management about needed services or improvement of existing services.

  • Diverse Populations – Ability to match career advising programs or services to meet the identified needs of specific client groups.
  • Career Development Models – Understands career development theories, how they differ, and how the models can be applied to career advising services.

Option 3: Completion of a Career Guidance Course at Accredited University

Description:

The 3-hour continuing education course fulfillment may be waived with documentation of an IACA-approved Master’s- or PHD-level course you completed at an accredited university or successful completion of the Career Development Facilitator course. Other courses considered for designation renewals must be specifically related to career guidance and completed at an accredited university, or through an approved vendor within two years of your certification renewal date.

To secure IACA approval, please submit the course description and transcript, including your final grade, to renewals@joiniaca.org. Grades lower than B- (80%) will not be considered. All renewals must be complete by the end of the month in which you first completed your course.
